Turn CSV or a spreadsheet paste into a Markdown table

Output

GitHub-flavoured Markdown

304 characters

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

The table syntax

Tables are a GitHub Flavored Markdown extension, not part of CommonMark. The second row of hyphens is required and its colons set alignment: :--- left, :---: centre and ---: right. Padding the columns is only for people reading the source; renderers ignore it.

What a cell cannot hold

A cell is one line, so a line break inside a value has to become <br>, and a literal pipe must be escaped as \|. Block content such as lists or code blocks cannot go in a cell at all. If a table needs those, it wants to be HTML or a list.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy a table from Excel or Google Sheets?
Select the cells and copy. They arrive as tab-separated text, which this tool detects, so paste them straight in.
Does Markdown support merged cells?
No. GitHub Flavored Markdown tables have no colspan or rowspan; write the table as HTML if you need them.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
